About Tod Marshall:

Tod Marshall, a poet and professor at Gonzaga University, is serving as the poet laureate from 2016-2018. He is the author most recently of Bugle (2014), which won the Washington State Book Award in 2015. He succeeds poets Elizabeth Austen (2014-2016), Kathleen Flenniken (2012–2014), and Sam Green (2007–2009).

What is a Poet Laureate and why does it matter?

According the website, Washington Poet Laureate: ” The Poet Laureate serves to build awareness and appreciation of poetry — including Washington’s legacy of poetry — through public readings, workshops, and presentations in communities throughout the state. Tod Marshall is the Washington State Poet Laureate for 2016-18.”

What is Humanities Washington?

According to it’s stated mission: “Humanities Washington sparks conversation and critical thinking using story as a catalyst, nurturing thoughtful and engaged communities across our state.” Today’s event at Hand in Hand is an example of reaching out to the community through story and poetry.

What is Hand in Hand Immigration Services?

Hand in Hand is an amazing organization made up of amazing people who care. It’s a place where “immigrants can get accurate, up-to-date information on the citizenship process, and clarification of their particular requirements for citizenship. This is done by case workers certified by the Federal Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA). These case workers are trained by the BIA to give legal advice to immigrants and have all the necessary resources to guide eligible persons through the citizenship process. We offer classes in civics, prepare candidates to pass the citizenship test and interview, and assist in the completion of all paperwork requirements. We also work alongside the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to coordinate Naturalization Ceremonies year round.”

I hope to see you there. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.
